The majestic Nilgiris (or Blue Mountains) are part of India's Western Ghats, and cover nearly 2,500 square kilometres. These mountains highlight the UNESCO protected Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, known for its indigenous wildlife, dense forests, exotic species, and many water bodies. Several famous hill stations dot this region, beckoning the romantic and biophilic at heart!

Our itinerary is ideal for those who love travelling, cycling, and exploring the outdoors. You'll conquer challenging climbs, enjoy the pristine beauty of these hills, and stay in an expansive tea estate surrounded by forests. Join us as we'll be riding on some of the quieter routes and visiting lesser-known destinations in the Nilgiris.

So I've decided what I'm gonna do now
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains
Where the spirits go now
Over the hills where the spirits fly, oh, I really don't know
~ 'Misty Mountain Hop' - Led Zeppelin, 1971

We totally get these iconic lyrics. Who wouldn't want to head to the mountains for some peace, to soak in their natural beauty, and to escape from the din of the cities and the heat of the plains?

Itinerary:

Day 1
Experience living in a cosy homestay, nestled amid a sprawling tea and coffee estate. Plan ahead to arrive here by nightfall, so you can rest well for your ride the next day. Take the time to meet your friendly hosts and get acquainted with fellow travellers through the evening.

Day 2
Distance: 70 kms, Elevation gain: 1,950 m
Wake up early to catch a sunrise scene from flower-fringed gardens, and prepare for an exciting day while sipping on your choice of hot beverages. Departing from your homestay, you will pass by expanses of manicured tea estates set against rolling hills. Taking pitstops at a dozen viewpoints - overlooking Melkundha Valley, Thaishola Tea Estate, and Kinnakorai to name a few - you will be rewarded with panoramic vistas that the Nilgiris is famous for. Your breaks will also include chatting with locals over tea and coffee at the Thaishola Canteen, and enjoying a picnic lunch at a scenic location. Expect to encounter some wildlife enroute as you ascend these winding roads on the fringes of the Attappadi Reserve Forest. A campfire dinner will await you back at the homestay.

Day 3
Distance: 40 kms, Elevation Gain: 1,000 m
Today, you will explore more of the picturesque countryside visiting nearby towns south of Coonoor. Listen to your guides as they share stories of local legends while you rest under roadside gazebos. Learn about the history of tea and coffee in the region, and the British Raj sentiment.

Day 4
Duration: 3.5 hrs, Highest Point: 1,800 m, Difficulty level: Easy-to-Moderate

Following breakfast at your homestay, begin your hike that will showcase the varied terrain of this region. You will pass through tea estates, coffee plantations, and Shola forests rich in diverse flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for native wildlife such as the Gaur, monkeys, Sloth bears, and the Barking Deer that frequent these hillsides, as the trail borders a national park. You may get a glimpse of the local Irula tribe going about their daily life while passing through their hamlet. Upon reaching the distinctly-shaped summit of Sengottaraayar Malai, take in uninterrupted views the Nilgiri Mountains, sometimes shrouded by clouds! Head back down reminiscing your journey over the past three days, and return home.
