Depending on which root/route you take, the etymology of the name Kodaikanal can reveal one of several meanings: "the gift of the forest", "the summer forest" or "the forest of creepers". On this tour, Kodaikanal will mean all of these things and so much more. As is evident from archaeological findings in several dolmen sites, humans are known to have inhabited parts of this region for over 3.5 millenia, attributed in no small part to its pleasant weather that is moderate all year, and its fertile soil.
Our base for this tour is a beautiful homestay nestled in a coffee estate, at an elevation of 1300 m, about 60 km from Kodaikanal. It is located far away from the din of the weekend vacationers, so it is perfect for those of us looking to do a quiet exploration of the natural beauty of the region.
The routes we've carefully chalked out for this tour are on back-country roads where few, if any, have ever ridden. Parts of the terrain here can be challenging but offer incredibly beautiful views of forested hills, valleys and many lakes and dams. Some of the routes descend down to the plains and then climb back up, first passing through shrub forests and then tropical forests which get progressively denser as you regain altitude. Other routes loop around the estate area, plunging down and over the undulating terrain, weaving in and out of dense forests, and passing through pretty little hamlets perched on the hillside.
Join us to experience a soul-filling journey through these lands of many enchantments!
